Step-by-step help for HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw Wi-Fi Setup.
Know which wireless features the M255dw actually has
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw has built-in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, supports WPS and Wi-Fi Direct, and uses a 2.7-inch color touchscreen. It can therefore join a normal wireless network or use Wi-Fi Direct for device-to-printer printing without relying on the same network.
For normal home or office Wi-Fi
Use HP’s current setup workflow to connect the M255dw to the wireless network and install the printer on the computer or mobile device. Keep the printer near the router during setup, and make sure you are configuring the M255dw rather than following instructions for another M255-series variant.
If your router and preferred setup method use WPS, the M255dw supports WPS. If you want a direct connection instead of putting the printer on the local network, HP also supports Wi-Fi Direct on this model.
Verify the connection from the printer
Do not guess whether setup worked. The M255dw can print a Network Summary from its touchscreen Reports menu. It can also run a Wireless Network Test from its self-diagnostics controls. These are useful when the printer appears connected but a computer or phone still cannot print.
If Wi-Fi setup fails
- Run the Wireless Network Test and review the result before repeatedly reinstalling software.
- Print or view the network information and confirm that the printer is on the intended network.
- If Wi-Fi Direct works but normal network printing does not, focus troubleshooting on the router/network path rather than the print engine.
- If the printer is reachable on the network but one computer cannot print, move to driver, queue or operating-system troubleshooting.
Wi-Fi Direct is different from normal Wi-Fi setup
Wi-Fi Direct creates a direct wireless printing path to the M255dw. It can be useful when a normal local network is unavailable, but it is not the same as joining the printer to your regular router-based network.
