Step-by-step help for Brother DCP-L2540DW Wi-Fi Setup.
Connect your DCP-L2540DW to a wireless network
The Brother DCP-L2540DW can connect to your network wirelessly, allowing compatible computers and mobile devices on the network to use the printer without a direct USB connection.
Before starting, make sure you know your wireless network name and password.
What you need before starting
Have these details ready:
- Your wireless network name, also called the SSID
- Your Wi-Fi password, also called the Network Key or Security Key
- Access to the DCP-L2540DW control panel
- Your wireless router or access point turned on
If you do not know your network name or password, check your router or its documentation.
Connect using the Setup Wizard
On the DCP-L2540DW:
- Press Menu.
- Use the arrow buttons to select Network, then press OK.
- Select WLAN, then press OK.
- Select Setup Wizard, then press OK.
- When asked to enable WLAN, enable the wireless network.
- Wait while the printer searches for available networks.
- Select your wireless network name (SSID).
- Press OK.
- Enter your wireless network password when requested.
- Press OK.
- Confirm that you want to apply the settings.
The printer will then attempt to connect to the wireless network.
Check whether the connection succeeded
If the connection is successful, the printer should display Connected.
The machine can also print a wireless status report.
If the connection fails, check the error information on the report before repeating the setup process.
Your Wi-Fi network does not appear
If your network name is missing from the available networks:
- Make sure the wireless router is turned on.
- Move the printer closer to the router temporarily.
- Run the Setup Wizard again.
- Check whether your router is broadcasting its network name.
- Confirm that you are selecting the correct network.
If your router is configured not to broadcast its network name, you may need to enter the SSID and security information manually.
Wi-Fi password is not accepted
Make sure you are entering the correct wireless password.
Wi-Fi passwords can be case-sensitive, so check:
- Uppercase and lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Special characters
- Similar-looking characters such as
0andO
The password needed here is your wireless network password, not a Brother account password or printer administrator password.
Printer connected to Wi-Fi but computer cannot find it
A successful wireless connection does not automatically mean the printer is correctly installed on every computer.
If the DCP-L2540DW says it is connected but your computer cannot find it:
- Make sure the computer is connected to the appropriate network.
- Restart the printer.
- Restart the computer.
- Check that the Brother software is installed correctly.
- Add or reinstall the printer using Brother’s current setup instructions if necessary.
Also check whether security software or network configuration is preventing communication with the printer.
Asked for a WPS PIN in Windows?
If Windows asks you to enter a WPS PIN while adding the printer, do not assume this is your normal Wi-Fi password.
Brother recommends using its supported wireless setup method, such as the machine’s Wireless Setup Wizard, rather than completing setup through an unexpected Windows WPS PIN request.
Cancel the WPS PIN prompt and configure the wireless connection through the Brother setup procedure instead.
Wi-Fi stopped working after changing your router
If you replace your router or change its network name or Wi-Fi password, the printer’s saved wireless settings may no longer be correct.
Run the wireless Setup Wizard again and connect the DCP-L2540DW using the new:
- Network name
- Wi-Fi password
- Network settings
You may also need to reconnect or reinstall the printer on your computers afterward.
USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi are different connections
The DCP-L2540DW supports more than one connection method.
A working USB connection does not prove that the wireless connection is configured correctly. Similarly, an Ethernet connection and a Wi-Fi connection use different network interfaces.
When troubleshooting, identify which connection method you actually want to use and test that connection specifically.
